When the North American storm is seen over Canada from space, one of the astronauts from the space station takes a picture of it to send to Houston. Jack Hall and his team see the picture and thinks that it looks just like a hurricane. Only they don't form over land. Most of the characters including the meteorologist mentions that they look like hurricanes. They are actually in fact called polar vortexes or vertices. Also known as Northeasters. It happens when more than one snowstorm or blizzard form in a fast circular motion. It also causes the air to be super cold, so cold that it freezes things instantly. Being a climatologist, Jack Hall should have known right away what those storms were called.
