Prior to the battle between Commodus and Maximus, the elevator or lift only has enough room for one row of Praetorian Guards (approximately 20) and their shields and spears. Upon surfacing in the floor of the Colosseum, a substantially larger amount of guards. spears and shields appear (approximately 40), in forming the Roman Testudo formation, on the elevator platform, prior to dispersing.
