When Jopling throws Deputy Kovacs' Persian cat from a second floor window, the cat has a very good chance of surviving with, at worst, minor injuries. Cats are now known to orient themselves paws-down within the first meter of falling (using their feline righting reflex), spread out their legs mid-fall to maximize aerodynamic drag minimize falling velocity, and arch their flexible spines just before landing, the better to absorb and dissipate their kinetic energy through muscles and skeletal joints upon landing. Urban veterinarians have called it Feline High-Rise Syndrome.
