Just before the very end of the film, Ripley shoots the Alien with the grappling gun used for firing cable across rough terrain (to anchor cable, for climbing and such). The alien uses its tail to try to pull itself back on board the shuttle. If you look closely, just as Ripley fires the plasma engines, which ultimately blow the alien into space, you can see a thin wire, which was used by the film crew to pull its tail into the engine.
