The Egyptian general Achillas denies playing a part in the assassination of Pompey, but this is not true. In fact, he, Lucius Septimus (a former officer for Pompey), and a third individual, Savius, killed Pompey together.Knowing that accepting Pompey as a guest would make Caesar an enemy, Achillas decided to end it. Approaching Pompey's ship in a fishing boat, they boarded, at which time Pompey tried to allay suspicions by referring to Septimus as a friend. Suddenly, Septimus ran him through with a sword. Achillas and Savius then stabbed him with daggers. The charred head of Pompey, which had been placed on a funeral pyre by one of his servants several days before Caesar's arrival, was presented to him. As depicted, Caesar was revolted at the dishonorable treatment of Pompey. He later had the remains interred with honor on the grounds of Pompey's villa at Alba.Because of Pompey's astounding military conquests, primarily in Asia, he was likened to Alexander the Great. He continued to be celebrated long after his death, with his likeness even being part of the funeral procession of Caesar's successor Augustus in 14 CE.
