The main character wires two car batteries directly to the power cord of a standard microwave oven, and operates it successfully to pop microwave popcorn. This is impossible without an inverter, as the car batteries operate on 12 volt DC (direct current) and microwave ovens operate on 120 volt AC (alternating current).
