After Slater escapes from the bad guys hideout he inexplicably isn't wearing his overcoat. There is no logical reason for him to return to the hideout later other than for the viewers to see the two Slaters together and know there has been a switch. When Wheatley and Miller come to his rescue Slater is just sitting there by himself in the dark waiting but now has his overcoat on. Slater had the school bus available and could have left anytime.
