One of the main reasons Roman legionaries were hard to kill was because of their large rectangular shield (scutum). Except in the opening battle, and for a brief moment at Crucifixion were few soldiers used it, in the rest of movie Roman legionaries didn't use shield at all - not on guard duties, not in potentially dangerous missions, never. Furthermore, not even Roman cavalry later use its own large oval shields in pursuing mission. Only very late in the movie for a brief moment Pilate's guard finally have shields but they were ceremonial as he was waiting imperial ships to dock.
