In real life, Alan Turing's marriage proposal to Joan wasn't a ploy to keep her at Bletchley Park. Nor did he break it off because John Cairncross blackmailed him. Joan told the BBC in 1992 that she and Turing were interested in each other. He arranged their shifts so they could work together, and introduced her to his family. But the engagement was off by the summer of 1941.
