Elysium is a habitat built to support the wealthiest 1% of the population. Like any isolated wealthy community, it won't have the capability to support the other 99% as depicted in the ending, at least not in a sustained manner. In a very short time, Elysium would become deteriorated just like Earth from overpopulation.
