Kay says that when the replacement to CDs comes out, he'll "have to buy the White Album again." Later in the movie, we see that Kay still uses 8-track tapes, which means he hasn't gotten a new White Album in the course of a number of format changes (tapes and CDs). However, it is quite likely that Kay has several copies of the album in various formats to use where needed, such as the 8-track for this particular car, perhaps a cassette tape for his personal car, a CD for his home stereo, etc. It is unlikely that Kay only has one 8-track copy that he constantly carries around with him to listen to at different times and places.
