Apart from the fact that Lou Gehrig benched himself before the game in Detroit and never was part of the lineup, thus ending his streak after a game against the Washington Senators two days earlier, Gehrig is shown on deck while a Yankee wearing No. 15 is at bat. No. 15 was worn by pitcher Red Ruffing. Although Ruffing did start (and finish) this game against Detroit, he was a right-handed batter, not a lefty, as is shown. More relevant, as the pitcher, Ruffing batted ninth, whereas Gehrig batted fifth in the 8 games in which he played in 1939, so Gehrig never would have been on deck with Ruffing at bat. It should have been No. 5, Joe DiMaggio (who also was a right-handed hitter), at bat. Also, Babe Dahlgren is shown warming up at first base after Gehrig benches himself. However, Dahlgren is shown wearing No. 26, which was rookie catcher Buddy Rosar's uniform number that season. Dahlgren actually wore No. 12.[However, it is stated in the opening credits: Except where true names are knowingly used, the characters herein and many incidents are fictional. Any resemblance between them and actual events and characters is coincidental.]
