When the Captain is talking to Fifield and Milburn when they are left behind, the Captain says there is a scan of life form one click west of them. West and other compass coordinates are only relevant on Earth and have the North Pole as a point of reference.The magnetic direction applies to planets that have a magnetic field, not just Earth.
