After Indy and Sallah have discovered the Ark within the Well of the Souls, they pack it in a crate and it is hauled out by the workers. In the biblical instructions, only Levites were authorised to handle the Ark. Indeed, when a non-levite (Uzzah) touched the Ark he was struck dead by God.
