When the villagers gather on the shore after Smaug's attack on Laketown and learn of the treasury being lost, one villager says it's probably halfway down the Anduin. Anduin is not a tributary river to the lake and runs on the other side of Mirkwood, a world away for a simple villager and therefor not a likely reference even for the village idiot.
