When Gabriel Martin confronts the Green Dragoons after they have burned the town church, Colonel Tavington is seen reloading his pistol twice, once before shooting Reverend Oliver and then a few seconds later when he shoots a second time at Gabriel. In both of the reloading sequences he throws away the pistol ramrod before aiming and firing the pistol. This would have made it impossible for him to reload the pistol the second time, especially in the scant seconds between shots.
