Sulu reports that unless the Enterprise is slowed down, it will be incinerated as it falls though the atmosphere. In fact, for an object the size of the Enterprise, most of it would survive entry through the atmosphere, especially since, at a velocity of around 25,000 mph, it would travel through the lower part of the atmosphere in about 10 seconds. This means that its destruction would not be through atmospheric friction but by its impact on land or sea.
