When John Glenn's landing coordinates determined by the IBM 7090 are being validated by Katherine, Al Harrison (Kevin Costner) comments that she calculated "more digits than the machine". We later see Katherine's coordinates written down and are to 7 digits of precision. The Fortran program in the 7090 would have used double precision floating point numbers to do the calculation. Double precision floating point yields 16 significant digits. Kevin's comments might have been salesmanship, but unfortunately in reality the computer wins.
