Alfred makes a controversial decree that the churches are to perform their services in English instead of Latin. This would have been a very controversial decree and would have preceded the reformation by almost 700 years. However, in reality what Alfred did was to ask the churches were to provide education in English instead of Latin. As this was not a matter of disagreement of religious practice it's unlikely this would have caused any serious controversy. The fact that there are no sources even alluding to conflict about the matter is evidence in itself of how inoffensive Alfred's reform was in the end.
