Beethoven never signed the guardian rights to Karl back to his mother on his deathbed as depicted in the film. In fact, after Beethoven's death in 1827, Karl was sent to live with his mother's relative Jakob Hotschevar (as he was still a minor) who, like Beethoven, was known for his strong negative opinion towards Johanna.
