A member of the group of recreational divers encounters and tries to trap a spiny lobster. This species is native to Florida and the Caribbean, and not to northern areas such as Massachusetts or New York State where the movie is set. However, this may not necessarily be a goof, but a deliberate choice by the director to aid continuity within this film and to the first film. The Great White Shark, while native to most oceans (including these northern waters) prefers the warmer oceans also. Additionally, in the first film, marine biologist Hooper, says the Tiger Shark that the town believe is the killer shark, is also rarely found in these waters. Also in the first film, Mayor Vaughn says to Chief Brody that this is 'gonna be one of our best Summers yet.' All of this could simply suggest that the temperatures in the last few years have been hotter in the town then they have previously. This in turn could explain why both species of shark, and the spiny lobster, have migrated further North than usual.
