At the beginning the Description of the Top Gun mission statement says it was designed to train the top men and WOMEN aviators. The mission statement in 1969 would not have included women since only men were aviators.LCDR Barbara Ann Allen (Rainey) was the first female naval aviator, earning her wings in 1974 and was the first to qualify in jets.Becky Calder was the first woman to graduate from Top Gun in 2004, having earned her naval aviator wings in 2000.
