The whole time Forrest was in the Army, they DID wear dog tags in boot camp. However, in combat, the dog tags were usually lost. In actuality a soldier will be wearing them at all times. And during the Vietnam War all soldiers were to have at least on Dog Tag tied in their Boot Laces.
