(at around 58 mins) When the alien gliders first appear, the Air Force is taken by surprise, yet the tactical display at the base already displays them as neat iconic abstractions. It needs a qualified person to design concise 2D icons from complex 3D shapes though, and of course, knowledge of this shape to begin with.
