It is physically impossible for the core of the earth to stop spinning because of its massive momentum. The core, however, does cause the earth's magnetic field to reverse polarity about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, much like a pendulum swings back and forth, but it never stops unless another force of equal mass acts upon it (Newton's Third Law).
