When Admiral Greer and Skip are aboard the Ruben James "maintaining the illusion" for the Russian crew to believe that Ramius scuttled the Red October by dropping a live torpedo in the water, Greer detonates the torpedo less than 100 yards away from the Red October's propeller's. This would have the same effect, if not greater than, a depth charge, and the Red October would have been serious damaged or destroyed by the proximity of the explosion.
