At 1 hr. 42 mins, you can clearly see 3 X-wings get shot down by the cannons. However, when the movie cuts back to the resistance base, the officer stays that 2 X-wings have been shot down. He could have called in the first before the other two, but all of them were shot down in quick succession of each other, making that highly improbable.
