Cornelius and Zira explained to the humans how the apes gradually evolved from human pets, to speaking animals, to eventually taking over the world. However, the plot then focuses on Zira's soon to be born child, as if the baby was actually be the very beginning of the eventual takeover of the apes. This is after the origin of the ape's takeover has already been established as coming from a different source, so the humans succeeding in a plot to kill Zira's baby would really make no difference. (Note: Dr. Hasslein was worried that an ape child of Cornelius' and Zira's intellect, speech, and knowledge could spawn a whole tribe of talking apes which could eventually try and take over the world).
