On the USS Ward, the commanding officer is wearing the gold oak leaf insignia of a lieutenant commander. In real life, her commanding officer, W. W. Outerbridge, was a lieutenant, one grade below what is shown, on the day of the attack. This was reinforced by Captain Earle's comment that the skipper was "just a green kid."
