At the end when John Wayne and Robert Mitchum are walking together, Wayne is using the crutch in step with his injured leg while Mitchum is not. Regardless of all the crutch issues with this film, this final scene shows that Mitchum simply doesn't care which leg is injured and Howard Hawks let him get away with it.
