Normally, the hyenas possess only three digits. However, they get a thumb on two occasions for plot purpose: in first, Shenzi when she catches Zazu hastily fleeing from them in the graveyard. In second, Banzai when he claws at Simba fleeing from the gorge after Mufasa's death: he lets four visible scratches on the rock where the lion cub barely escapes.
