When Gaius instructs the soldiers to kill the two prisoners (on the command of Commodus), he says "fire". Since the command 'fire' was derived from the gunpowder igniting in muskets, Roman archers certainly would not have used this term to shoot arrows. Indeed, during the opening battle scene, when such order is given, the word used is "loose."
