Captain Ramius is in error when he said Corte burned his ships which is a misconception. In fact, Cortes scuttled 10 of his 11 ships; scuttling: intentionally sinking a ship by letting water inside the hull. Presumably he did this to prevent completely terrifying his men, thinking they were next. Instead, Cortes' crew had no choice but to head inland from Vera Cruz. Given Ramius' extensive sailing knowledge, he should have known.
