SPOILER: The German column in the fight at the end consist mostly of troops on foot but also has several vehicles. They would of course send at least one small group scouting ahead in one of the vehicles, like the armored half-track, precisely to avoid running into an ambush like that.
Besides, with the knowledge that Allied forces could be literally everywhere (in April '45 the Wehrmacht was holding the diminishing Ruhr pocket, an ever shrinking strip roughly 60-80 miles between Hanover and Berlin and had virtually no more aerial support protecting them from Allied fighter planes), only the most fanatic and stupid commander of the column would march the soldiers in a neat line singing a tune.
