The movie is set in late 1876, after Custer's defeat. When Hochbauer and the others go to place Quincannon under arrest for being out of uniform, one of the Sgt's helping says he'd love to put Quincannon in the 'cooler'.Cooler as a term for jail was first used in the mid 1880's.
