The major could have simply refused to fight and demanded a court martial. It is the right of every service member to receive a court martial, especially in a rear unit. As the unit had not left for combat and was not in the field, the more stringent measures available to military units (including firing squads) to deal with insubordination or perceived cowardice would not be applicable.The major would then have been removed to the stockade (or brig if they were located at a naval facility) and held until the time of his court martial.
