The movie, set in 1944, portrays pilots from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier that is later reported as sunk. The Navy lost a light carrier (CVL), U.S.S. Princeton, and two escort carriers (CVE), U.S.S. Gambier Bay and U.S.S. St. Lo, in October 1944, the only American carriers sunk that year in the Pacific. However, at that stage of the war, none of these three ships carried dive bombers, the type of aircraft that Cdr. Andy Crewson (Cary Grant) flies.
