After Ruby is sprayed by the skunk, Pat Inman runs her hands through the dogs fur several times while mentioning the smell. Skunk spray is seriously noxious and leaves a oily, sticky residue on the fur that transfers to your hands. There's no way you'd want to put your hands on a dog that was just sprayed by a skunk.
