Robert is forced to hide his Christianity upon his arrival to the Middle East, as the religion is banned. In fact, by the time the movie is set, the Middle East was under the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate and was quite a tolerant and diverse place. Clashes with Christianity did not fully start until the First Crusade, almost 80 years after the events of the film.
