The actual quote (or assumed quote since people dispute whether this was the right translation) by Clausewitz was "war is merely the continuation of policy by other means" not "War is a continuation of politics by other means." Second, it is not exactly accurate that "the purpose of war is to serve a political end...but the true nature of war is to serve itself" since On War talks about more than just this.
