Maverick tells Rooster he will climb so they can eject, but the Martin-Baker Aircraft Mk. GRU-7(A) F-14A Tomcat seat is designed to safely eject at zero altitude, so they could eject at sea level and survive. However, based on how well everything else is working in the old aircraft, he may not have trusted it to do more than get them out of the aircraft. The seat is potentially more that 40 years old.
