When Marty and Doc read the headline from 1885 regarding Doc's death, it says he leaves behind his beloved Clara. However, she was supposed to die in the ravine accident which was only prevented because Marty and Doc were there while figuring out how to get back to their time. Clara should have died and thus never would have been able to fall in love with Doc and make it into his obituary.
