At the beginning of the film, Maverick takes off from the test facility in Nevada and flies east, achieving Mach 1 (approx. 700 mph) relatively quickly. From there he constantly accelerates over the course of the scene gaining an altitude higher than a commercial airliner (the curvature of the Earth can be seen), eventually reaching Mach 10.2 (over 7000 mph). At these speeds, for this amount of time, Maverick runs a realistic risk of ejecting over the Atlantic Ocean, not a populated area within the U.S.
