as the van enters Piedmont the crew radios in, control acks and tells them to leave the radio open. the commentary as the crew drives in is heard. Up to where the astoundment happens, control asks what is happening over the audio of the crew and their reply. With the radio open, no reply would have been heard, so no answer would have been able to be given.
