The number of place settings at the tables at the initial feast show that there are 8 first-years in each house, which would make 32, but when the pupils are lined up for their first flying lesson, there are only 26. However, it's perfectly reasonable to have extra place settings at the house tables - regardless of the total number, it isn't known how many first-years will be seated at each table until they are sorted.
