In the young Sam's first steerage of a steamboat, he is told to avoid trees which we see are off the port (left) side but, when the scene cuts to the over-the-shoulder shot of Sam, the trees are on the starboard (right) side. He then turns the wheel to the right (starboard) which should crash the boat directly into the trees. But, when it cuts back to the full shot of the vessel, the ship is successfully turning away from the trees which again are on the port side.
