When Melanie and her dad, Earl, are driving in the truck, Earl, like many characters in films and shows shooting in a non-moving vehicle, constantly moves the steering wheel side to side. People actually driving don't do that because the car would weave side to side on the road. Drivers would keep the wheel still so the vehicle will continue to move ahead in a straight line.
