When the staff were briefed on the Russian test orbit, there were military officers in uniform with the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross on their uniforms. US involvement in Vietnam started in 1960, that medal would not have existed. Also, LTC Johnson had absolutely no unit or medals/decorations and miniature Lieutenant Colonel leaves on his Service Dress uniform. Wrong size.
