Ballistic submarines maintain a very close sonar watch on vessels in the vicinity to avoid detection. It is inconceivable that a vessel the size of the 'sub-eater' could have come as close as it did without being detected. Whilst its intended purpose would not have been known the fact that there was a large merchant vessel in close proximity would be paramount in the CO's mind and he would have immediately checked the bearing of the contact to ensure they were at a safe distance.
