Shuttles cannot just fly off the Earth and proceed directly to a space station like Elysium as depicted in the film without taking into account both the rotation of the Earth and the orbit of Elysium around the Earth. The G forces necessary to propel a shuttle directly into space would have to be so enormous that any occupants would be killed instantly.
